Left, Nan Goldin, Nan as a dominatrix, Boston, 1978, cibachrome print, 40 x 30 inches. Via. Right, Jennifer Sullivan, Nan as a Dominatrix, 2008, gouache, ink, colored pencil and collage on paper, 96 x 48 inches.

Nan as a Dominatrix, Boston, appeared on the cover ofARTnews in December 1996, while Goldin was enjoying a major retrospective of her work at the Whitney Museum of American Art entitled I’ll Be Your Mirror. Her color photographs, which contemplate issues of gender, power, and dependency, were first shown not in galleries, but as slide shows set to rock-and-roll soundtracks and played in clubs during the 1980s. In her work Goldin has chronicled drug rehabilitations, terminal illnesses, relationships, and abuse, as well as the quotidian affairs of life, exposing private, often intimate, frequently turbulent, and sometimes disturbing lifestyles. Over time she has assembled a visual biography of herself and the individuals who inhabit her life.
